Thinking in the Context of Exploding Digital Universe
Yesterday IDC released an update to its white paper on Digital Universe - here are some tidbits:
1) The digital universe in 2007 was 281 exabyte or 281 billion gigabytes.

2) By 2011, the digital universe will be 10 times the size it was in 2006.
3) Approximately 70% of the digital universe is created by individuals, but 85% are managed by enterprises.

In the context of digital universe, the enterprise web* is only a portion of this humongous pie, but its adoption is accelerating in companies of all sizes.
Meanwhile, the consumer web continues to produce and funnel data to the enteprise. Aggregation means replication of data already available on various other sites on the Web. So does the distribution of widgets. Personalization requires tracking, storing, and analyzing lots of data. The list goes on. All of these data need to be managed by the online service providers. The implication is big - and enterprise IT vendors are beginning to realize it. I will elaborate in another post. In the meantime, if you want to read the original report click here.
*I currently define enterprise web pretty loosely, but it includes social web for the enterprise (Web 2.0 systems including wiki, community, blogs etc) and web-based enterprise apps, platforms, and services (SaaS e.g. Salesforce.com).
